Jia, team coming back home

July 10, 2013

Even as the San Antonio Silver Stars have struggled to start the season, Jia Perkins has done her part to help.

The former Granbury Lady Pirate standout and Texas Tech All-American has started 10 of the team’s 11 games. She is second on the team in scoring (12.1) and leads in steals per game (1.91). She is third in assists (1.8).

In addition, Perkins is third in 3-point field goal attempts (32) and is tied for second in 3-pointers made (12) for a .375 percentage (second).

Perkins’ season-high in points is 21 in a 91-86 loss to Seattle. She scored 20 points with five rebounds, four assists and two steals, her best all-around contest, in a 72-70 loss to her former team, the Chicago Sky.

Perkins and the Silver Stars (3-8) are wrapping up three consecutive games on the road as they try to keep from slipping to the bottom of the WNBA Western Conference standings.

The Silver Stars are playing at Phoenix (8-5) tonight. San Antonio is 1-5 on the road.

The Silver Stars return home Friday to host Washington (6-6) in a game to be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.

The Silver Stars have been playoff regulars since they moved from Utah in 2003, reaching the 2008 WNBA Finals.

The Silver Stars are Perkins’ third WNBA home. She previously played with Charlotte and Chicago.

Perkins came off the bench last season, her first in San Antonio, and was third in the Sixth Woman of the Year voting. She was named a WNBA All-Star with Chicago in 2009, scoring 16 points in the game.

Perkins was also recently named to the Silver Stars’ All-Decade Team.
