Indians settle for third place in District 17-A

February 12, 2014

For seven of the eight quarters they played each other in District 17-A, the Lipan Indians and Lingleville played back-and-forth basketball.

Then came the fourth quarter of Friday’s game in Lipan.

Lingleville outscored the Indians 33-25 in the final period to pull away for an 84-73 victory.

The win kept Lingleville (22-3, 8-1 in District 17-A), No. 9 in the state in Class A Division II, in the hunt with No. 10 Huckabay (20-6, 8-1) for the district championship. Lipan (13-14, 6-3), had hoped to grab a share of the district title with a win in this game and at Huckabay last night, but the Indians will enter the postseason as the third seed from the league.

“The team and I were very disappointed at the outcome of this game,” said Lipan coach Cody Chandler. “We had several good days of practice before the game.”

Trevor Hedeman led Lipan with 20 points and five assists. Derrick Cook had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Lance Ferguson scored 17 points with seven boards.

When the teams met the first time in Lingleville, the Indians fell 66-61. Like that night, the game was very winnable for the Indians Friday.

However, Lingleville appeared to make everything it attempted in the final quarter.

“In the second half, especially the fourth quarter we could not keep them from scoring,” said Chandler. “They made several circus shots and free throws when they had to.”

Lipan led 37-36 at the half.

A major difference was at the free throw line, where Lipan hit 55 percent (12-for-22)) compared to 71 percent for Lingleville (20-for-28).

Despite the loss, Chandler is confident his team can make an impact in the upcoming postseason.

“We are looking forward to the playoffs and hope to be making a long run,” he said.
