Led by Kyle Mercer’s 21 points, the Lipan Indians built a giant lead against visiting Gordon Friday and went on to a 63-44 home victory in a District 17-A basketball game.

The Indians (10-13 overall) improved to 2-1 in district.

Lipan used a 36-14 run over the second and third quarters to stretch its lead to 55-26. Gordon finished strong, but Lipan was clearly the dominant team.

“We played pretty good tonight,” said Lipan coach Cody Chandler. “We got off to a good start and continued it through the first three quarters.”

The Indians were hosting Lingleville last night with a chance to move into second place outright in district.

Mercer hit three of the Indians’ five 3-point shots in the game. He also grabbed five rebounds and blocked six shots.

The teams combined for 46 fouls, 25 against Lipan and 21 against Gordon. They also combined for 62 free throws, though neither took much advantage of the opportunities.

Lipan was 10-for-25 at the foul line and Gordon was 18-for-37.

The Indians did, however, force 20 turnovers. They committed 13 of their own.
