Indians keep title hopes alive

February 8, 2014

The Lipan Indians broke open a close game with a pair of big second-half runs to drop visiting Gordon 75-40 Tuesday night.

Lipan (13-13, 6-2 in 17-A) had already clinched a playoff berth, but also has a chance at a share of the district championship with Lingleville and Huckabay.

Lingleville is No. 9 in the state in Class A Division II and Huckabay is No. 10. The Indians came very close to upsetting both in the first round of district.

If Lipan defeats both, the three teams will finish the season in a three-way tie for the district title.

Trevor Hedeman’s 25 points led Lipan in the win over Gordon. Jorge Hernandez and Derrick Cook added 10 each.

Gordon took a 19-14 lead after the opening quarter and Lipan fought back to tie the contest at 29 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Indians went on a 22-9 run. They ended the contest with a 24-2 burst in the final quarter.

The teams combined to pull down 71 rebounds (39 Lipan, 32 Gordon), including 21 offensive boards (10 Lipan, 11 Gordon).

Lipan is back in the playoffs after missing last season.
