January 22, 2014

The Lipan Indians improved to 3-0 and prepared for their biggest week of the basketball season Friday with a 54-39 victory at Gordon.

Lipan (10-11 overall) was playing at Lingleville, the No. 9 team in the state in Class A Division II, last night for sole possession of first place in District 17-A. They host rival Huckabay, ranked No. 10, Friday.

“I am very proud of this team. Every game we seem to learn more about ourselves and how good we can really be,” said Lipan coach Cody Chandler.

Trevor Hedeman led Lipan with 15 points and six rebounds, while Jorge Hernandez added 12 points and eight boards. Lance Ferguson pulled down nine rebounds.

In all, the Indians outrebounded Gordon 53-35, including 19-17 on the offensive boards.

Lipan raced out to an 18-2 lead after the first quarter and built its lead to 45-19 after three quarters.

“Even though we did not play our best game, we still competed very hard from start to finish,” said Chandler.
