Hico picks up pace, pulls away from Tolar

December 15, 2012

The Tolar Lady Rattlers opened with a competitive first quarter Tuesday against Hico, but struggled offensively the rest of the way in a 56-29 nondistrict basketball loss.

Both teams scored 13 points in the opening quarter, but the Lady Rattlers fell behind 29-18 by halftime. Hico built its lead up to 43-24 by the close of the third quarter.

Meredith Caudle and Kacey Frazier led Tolar offensively with eight points each. Frazier made a pair of 3-point baskets.

Hannah Peregrino grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds on the night.

The Lady Rattlers (6-8) took only three free throws in the contest, and make two.

“We’ve played some pretty tough preseason games, and a couple (were) fairly close,” Tolar girls coach Benita Carlton said. “We’ve had a couple of injuries and people gone for some games so we’ve had to deal with some adversity.”

Carlton indicated that the team will be focused on improving offensively and defensively in district play, which began last night at home against Keene.

“We can’t get down on ourselves,” Carlton said. “We have to refocus (on) the task at hand.”
