Wright tops first event
Ty Wright played in his first Hood County News Junior Golf Tournament last summer, and by his own admission felt he could have done much better.
He did Wednesday, winning the first of the summer’s four events at Hidden Oaks.
Wright, a junior at Godley and a member of the school’s regional-qualifying golf team, shot a 9-over-par 81. He won the Boys 15-18 Division, the top division, by six shots over Cornerstone’s Garrett Parish. Another Cornerstone player, Jared Rudd, was third at 94.
“I played last year, but I didn’t do any good, but I liked the course and wanted to play again,” Wright said. “With a little practice, I got better.”
Wright overtook Parish with back-to-back pars about a third of the way into the round. He also birdied the third hole, his only birdie of the day.
Brayden Hurst won the Boys 13-14 Division with a 99, besting runner-up Kelton Grigsby by 11 shots.
In the Boys 10-12 Division, playing nine holes, Lane West won with a 71, one stroke better than Lawson Berry.
Wright also took the top spot in the summer points standings with eight. Players in the 15-18 Division accumulate points based on their finish in each of the first three tournaments, with eight going to first, seven to second, all the way to a point for eighth place.
The top eight in points standings will play in a match-play tournament Aug. 14-15 to determine the Hood County junior champion.
The next two tournaments are July 10 and 31.
Rudd had a couple of the day’s highlights when he birdied a couple of par-5 holes on the back nine.
“Yeah, that was pretty exciting,” he said. “I wish I had a few more of those.”
