Granbury tennis gets historic victory

October 19, 2013

For what is believed to be the first time in school history, the Granbury High tennis team has won beyond the regular season and district tournament.

The historic victory came Thursday with an 18-1 win over Burleson Centennial in the first round of the Area 7/8-4A Tournament at the GHS courts.

The Pirates (13-6) were playing Cleburne at press time at McLeland Tennis Center in Fort Worth. A victory there would put them in today’s tournament final at 1 p.m., also at McLeland, and qualify them for next week’s Region I Tournament in Wichita Falls.

“Wow, that’s pretty cool,” said an excited Granbury coach Jeff Bramlett. “Now we’d sure like to get 14 and 15 this weekend also.”

The 13 victories are also believed to be a school record for tennis victories in a season, eclipsing the 12-4 record of two years ago.

In rolling past Centennial for the second time this season (Granbury won 17-2 previously), the Pirates took a commanding 7-0 lead after doubles.

“That took the wind out of their sails,’ said Bramlett.

Bramlett rested several of his top players, using several from the junior varsity. He did so because rain forced postponement of the match from Tuesday to Thursday, thus creating a quick turnaround for Friday.

“We were hoping to have two days off, and then the rain came,” said Bramlett.

A win Friday could set up a rematch with Aledo today. The Bearcats (13-1) won the district regular season and Granbury won the league tournament.

This is the first season for area tournaments because the University Interscholastic League expanded postseason qualifiers from to four in each district. Previously, the top two finishers in district would advance to regionals.
