One of the major goals of a coach is to have his/her team moving forward at the end of a season.
And while no swimmer from Granbury High qualified for state from last weekend’s 4A Region II Meet in Mansfield, Pirate coach Nick Vollmer likes the way his team ended the season.
“I was extremely pleased with the meet and season,” said Vollmer.
“We dropped a massive amount of time at district and even more at regionals.”
As a team, the Lady Pirates placed 10th overall out of the field of 23, scoring 88 points. They had the second best showing from District 7-4A behind district champion Aledo, which scored 139 points for sixth.
The Granbury boys, meanwhile, placed 11th overall out of a field of 25, the top showing from 7-4A. They scored 64 points, edging district champion Aledo, which was 12th with 62.
Trophy Club Nelson won both the boys and girls team trophies, with the girls scoring 470 points and the boys coming in with 392.
The top swimmer in each event automatically qualified for state, with other qualifiers coming via wild-card entries from the remaining eight fastest times across the state’s eight regions.
The Lady Pirates had two swimmers finish fifth in their respective events. Sarah Spradlin posted a time of 1:06.49 in the 100-yard backstroke, and Rachael Rodgers clocked a 1:18.84 in the 100 breaststroke.
Spradlin also had a top-10 finish in the 200 freestyle, taking seventh. Hannah Morton was also in the top 10 in two events, placing eighth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free.
The girls 200 medley relay of Spradlin, Rodgers, Morton and Corissa Decker placed fourth in preliminaries with a time of 2:05.26. However, they were disqualified in the finals when one of the swimmers left the blocks early. Had they posted the same time in the finals they would have finished fourth overall.
The top eight times in the preliminaries advanced to the championship finals, while the next eight fastest times moved to the consolation finals.
The Lady Pirates had six entries in championship finals. The boys’ top finish and only entry in the championship finals was the 400 free relay of Tommy Wallace, Cole Rezsofi, Blake Ward and Clay Walters, which finished eighth.
“The kids were incredible, and I’m proud of all of them,” said Vollmer.
