Braving freezing temperatures with a wind chill in the 20s, the last thing either Granbury or Crowley wanted to do was go overtime in their soccer game Tuesday night at Pirate Stadium.
Then, with five minutes left, Mallory Bersi saved the day – for Granbury, at least. Her free kick from 35 yards out lifted the Lady Pirates to a 1-0 victory.
The victory improved the Lady Pirates to 3-1-1 this season. It was their second shutout and they have outscored their opponents 9-3 in regulation.
Their lone loss was in a shootout to Abilene Cooper in the championship game of the West Texas Shootout.
Crowley managed only four shots against the staunch Granbury defense.
“They had some opportunities, but we had about 70 percent of the play,” said Granbury coach David Winkleman.
The Lady Pirates also had some chances on which they did not capitalize. They didn’t finish three 1-on-1 situations.
Winkleman had high praise for his squad, including goalkeepers Kim Bantz and Jayci Welch, along with Hannah Phillips, Ashley Dyson, Kelci Slaughter and Bersi.
Crowley 0 0 – 0
Granbury 0 1 – 1
Granbury goal – Mallory Bersi (unassisted).
Granbury record – 3-1-1.
