Granbury qualifies 7 for regionals

They had to take a detour through Joshua to get there, but seven members of the Granbury High track team are headed to the 4A Region I Track Meet in Abilene.

Five Pirates and two Lady Pirates finished among the top four in their respective divisiions Wednesday and Thursday in the Class 4A Area 7-8 Meet in Joshua. This is the first year for classifications above Class A to hold area meets.

Also, the boys have a pair of alternates, as do the girls.

“Not bad. It’s not bad at all,” said Lady Pirate coach Mike Pinkerton.

Nick Doughty leads the Granbury regional qualifiers, advancing in two events. He won the triple jump (44 feet, 5 inches) and was fourth in the long jump (20-8).

Doughty is the only multiple-event qualifier for Granbury, but there were a couple more gold medals.

Chris Richardson continued his strong comeback season by running to first place in the 400-meter dash. Despite facing a strong wind for a portion of the race, he clocked a 49.58.

Mike Milson topped the pole vault, clearing 14 feet.

Austen Wade brought home a silver medal after finishing second in the long jump with a 22-0.25 effort, and Brendan Crosslin’s time of 15.51 seconds gave him a bronze in the 110 hurdles.

The lone medalist for the Lady Pirates was high jumper Shelby Cline. She cleared five feet to finish second.

Cline will be joined at regionals by Emma Thomas, who ran to fourth place in the 1600 with a 5:40.27.

“Emma ran a really strong race today,” said Pinkerton.

Two other Lady Pirates came extremely close to qualifying, but instead are alternates.

Jettin Murphy also cleared 5-0 in the high jump. However, she had more misses than the three with whom she was tied.

Rachel Perriello took fifth in the 400, posting a time of 1:02.72, despite running a fourth of the race into the wind.

“Rachel ran the 400 meters just like you’re supposed to run it,” said Pinkerton.

Perriello finished just .09 seconds out of fourth place.

Alternates for the boys are Luke Sandelin in the pole vault and the 400 relay.

Regionals are April 26-27 in Abilene. The top two finishers in each event earn automatic berths at state.
