Granbury girls bring home consolation trophy
Had Granbury and Weatherford met in the championship game of the Aledo Tournament, it would have been one heck of a final.
Instead, it was one heck of a first-round game, won 4-3 in a shootout by the Lady Kangaroos.
Weatherford went on to win the tournament, while Granbury recovered and brought home the consolation trophy with back-to-back wins after that defeat.
“It was a good tournament for us,” said Granbury coach David Winkleman. “We still haven’t been defeated in regulation.”
The Lady Pirates (5-2-1) also lost in a shootout to Abilene Cooper in the finals of the West Texas Shootout.
In the consolation final, a 3-2 win over Waxahachie, Granbury was in control throughout. Kelci Slaughter had a pair of goals, one on a penalty kick.
“We dominated. The defense played awesome,” said Winkleman. “We got to play a lot of people and see a lot.”
The Lady Pirates bounced back from the loss to Weatherford with a 2-0 blanking of Crowley as goalkeeper Kim Bantz posted her third shutout of the season and second against Crowley in less than a week.
“Kim made some good saves and the defense played really awesome,” said Winkleman.
“Crowley’s a good team.
“We had good pressure up top, good pressure in the midfield, a good all-around game.
“It was an exciting game. We didn’t give up a lot, but in a close game anything can happen.”
