Granbury boys close to another soccer title

The Granbury Pirates 3-0 victory at Kennedale Tuesday kept them atop the District 15-4A standings with three games remaining in the regular season.

The Pirates (14-3-5 overall) improved to 6-0-1 in league play. They entered last night’s final home game of the season a game ahead of Stephenville and Cleburne in the standings. They were hosting Stephenville, who brought them their only blemish in district with a 1-1 tie on Feb. 19 in Stephenville.

With Tuesday’s win, the Pirates now have 11 shutouts this season. They have outscored their district opponents 28-3.

“We had a really good defensive game,” said Granbury coach Doug Kissinger. “Kennedale didn’t put up much, but what they did we pushed aside before it got to the keepers.”

The Pirates scored early on a goal by Ryan Hammonds in the first three minutes. They didn’t score again until 20 minutes remained in the game.

“I thought it was going to be a slaughter when we scored early, but we really struggled for about 60 minutes offensively,” said Kissinger. “We had some breakaways, but shot them right at the goalkeeper.

“We did a lot of ball watching, but we still got the win. It’s good that we are talented enough that we can play like this and still get a 3-0 win.”
