The Granbury Pirates and Lady Pirates began the 2014 track season by competing in the Kangaroo Relays in Weatherford High School this past weekend.

Sophomore Jettin Murphy posted the highest finish for the Lady Pirates, taking second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet. Eugene Geis pole vaulted to a second-place finish with a 12-5, while Derek Beck ws right behind in third at 12-0.

The Lady Pirates return one regional qualifier from last season, sophomore Emma Thomas in the 1600-meter and 3200 runs. She, along with Murphy in the high jump, sophomore Sarah Sledge in the high jump, and sophomore Rachael Perriello in the 400-meter dash, qualified for area last season.

“We have some great returners. Very excited about the experience they will bring to the team and their leadership,” said Lady Pirate coach Amber Ward.

The boys return a couple of area qualifiers in senior pole vaulter Luke Sandelin and sophomore high jumper Dylan Graham.

Both the boys and girls teams return significant participants, and both Ward and Pirate coach Jodie Scott are impressed by the subvarsity newcomers.

“We are expecting these guys to contribute significantly to this year’s team,” said Scott. “They have grown up in the program watching the success others had.”
