GHS tennis returning to regionals

It took a little extra work this season, but the Granbury Pirates are once again at the Class 4A Region I Tennis Tournament in Wichita Falls this weekend.

The Pirates (14-7) got their by finishing second to Aledo (15-1) in the Area 7/8-4A Tournament this past weekend at McLeland Tennis Center in Fort Worth. The Bearcats earned an eighth consecutive trip with a 10-7 victory, while the Pirates are in for a third straight season.

This season, the UIL expanded playoff entries to four from each district. This meant the addition of an area tournament.

Granbury had a 4-3 lead after doubles play, but the Bearcats rebounded to win seven of 10 in singles.

“We had them where we wanted them,” said Granbury coach Jeff Bramlett. “But they showed why they are one of the top 15 teams in the state.

“I know we can beat them, though, and maybe we’ll get another chance at the regional tournament.”

Just over a week earlier, Aledo defeated Granbury 14-5 to win the regular season championship in District 7-4A. The Pirates then won the league tournament, in which the Bearcats did not play, having earned the bye to area.

The Pirates also set what is believed to be a team record for victories in a season, and won what is believed to be the program’s first postseason match beyond district play.

“It’s been a great season, and I’m glad we’re getting the chance to extend it,” said Bramlett.
