GHS tennis makes more progress

The Granbury High team tennis season came to an end Friday at the 4A Region I Tournament in Wichita Falls, but not before they threw a scare into Saginaw and gained a little more respect from those watching.

Saginaw rallied to win 11-8 after the Pirates (9-6) jumped out to a 4-3 lead following the doubles matches.

“We were able to outfox them in the doubles,” said Granbury coach Jeff Bramlett. “We almost had a 5-2 lead in doubles. If we’d done that, we might have been able to hold on.

“Their number one girl has already played a pro tournament. She’s being groomed for a pro career. And their number six guy was as good as our number one.”

Still, the Pirates kept things close. Among the closest matches, Kolby West, playing No. 4 Boys Singles, dropped a 12-10 tiebreaker in the third set.

Kasi Krieger, at No. 5 Girls Singles, held on for a 7-6, 7-5 win. Joel Rodgers and Thomas Tigner, No. 2 Boys Doubles, rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory. Sophie Mullen and Fiona Murphy rallied for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 Girls Doubles.

“Any number of matches we could have won,” said Bramlett. “We were the talk of the tournament. Several said to me, ‘Man, I heard you almost knocked off Saginaw.’

“We almost won our first match at regionals. Granbury has never done that before.”

This was the second consecutive year the Pirates have advanced to regionals after winning the District 7-4A Tournament. They’ve only qualified three times in school history, the other time being 2003.

District 7-4A regular season champion Aledo reached the second round of regionals, defeating Birdville 10-7 and losing 10-7 to Wichita Falls. The tournament featured 16 teams, and was won by Wichita Falls Rider.
