GHS tennis back at regionals

The Granbury High tennis team made history and put an end to some history in the same match Friday.

The Pirates’ 15-4 victory against Fort Worth Arlington Heights gave Granbury (9-5) the championship of the District 7-4A Tournament, sending them to regionals for a second straight season. It also ended a streak of 19 consecutive seasons in which Heights had advanced to regionals.

“This was a great accomplishment by these kids,” said Granbury coach Jeff Bramlett. “Heights had a lot of tradition riding on this match. To end that streak was an amazing thing.

“Heights was real classy in the loss. They shook our hands and wished us luck at regionals.”

The Region I tournament is Friday and Saturday in Wichita Falls. Drawings for first-round matches will be Thursday night, and Bramlett thinks his team can make an impression.

“We’ll be competitive, even with the top four,” said Bramlett.

“We feel like we are on the verge of a top-25 ranking, and if we could get a win at regionals that might solidify that.”

The top two teams advance to state in Austin Nov. 2-3.

Bramlett said the top four seeds at regionals will be Wichita Falls Rider, Wichita Falls High, Lubbock and Amarillo. Of those, Granbury faced Amarillo very early in the season and lost 18-1.

“We are so much better now than we were then, and a lot of those matches were close despite the overall team score,” Bramlett said.

Other regional entries who played the Pirates include Cleburne (18-1 Granbury win), Dumas (13-6 Granbury loss) and Aledo (12-7 Granbury loss), the District 7-4A regular season champ.

“We’d like another shot at those teams,” Bramlett said.

“I feel like we are peaking at the right time.”

The Pirates have won eight of nine matches after starting the season 1-4. The lone loss in that span was to Aledo.
