The Granbury Lady Pirates clinched a basketball playoff berth Friday night with their 76-30 drubbing of Southwest in Fort Worth.
But for a team that had just secured itself some extra playing time, there were some very nervous looks from coaches, players and fans.
Late in the first quarter, standout senior guard Morgan Northcutt drove in for a layup. She collided with a Lady Raider, and then into the wall of the tiny gym.
Northcutt stayed in the game through the second quarter, but then coach Leta Andrews sent her with her parents to the hospital to be checked out. There was some swelling in her knee, but no concussion, Andrews said.
“It was scary there for a little while, but she is doing better,” said Andrews.
“She is nervous, but she worked out well,” Andrews added Monday morning.
Unlike the larger gyms at Billingsley Field House and Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center, the gyms in the Fort Worth schools are typically small with the walls almost directly underneath each basket and just a couple feet out of bounds.
Northcutt, in her short stint, had 10 points and four steals. Bryce Frank led Granbury (17-9, 9-2 in 7-4A) with 19 points and 17 rebounds, while Amber Strange also had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Granbury can do no worse than fourth in 7-4Aand Southwest (8-17, 4-7) was eliminated. Granbury hosted runner-up Trimble Tech, No. 9 in the state, last night and hosts No. 2 and district-leader Aledo Friday.
Their district losses were on the road against Tech (63-45) and Aledo (53-27).
