GHS runners compete in Lubbock

Given coach Amber Ward’s record of advancing cross country runners to regional competition each year, the Granbury boys and girls likely got a glimpse of what lies ahead later this season at regionals when they competed in the Lubbock Meet last weekend.

Ward has coached runners to regionals in each of her 10 previous seasons at the helm of the Granbury program.

This past weekend the Lady Pirates finished 11th out of 18 teams. They bested two fellow District 7-4A squads, Aledo and Arlington Heights.

“Lubbock has three big hills, and they ran them great,” Ward said of her Lady Pirates. “Our Monday hill training workouts are helping. All of them knocked nearly two minutes off their time.”

Emma Thomas led all Granbury runners in the popular meet, finishing 43rd over the 3.1-mile course in a time of 20 minutes and 53 seconds. Lauren Hammonds was right behind her in 45th place, clocking a 20:56.

The Granbury boys were led by Andrew Reid, who was 102nd with a time of 18:44. Hayden Coppenbarger was 110th, finishing in 19 minutes.

“The boys also ran the hills very well, knocking nearly two minutes off their time as well,” Ward said.

“Lubbock was a successful meet. They gained experience and will know exactly what to expect at regionals.”
