Gettin’ summer kicks in

June 12, 2013

Most of us remember kickball from our elementary school days. Gone are the days when we could playfully enjoy a 30-minute recess with our friends playing “baseball on the ground.” Now we have to worry about the hustle and bustle of life in the real world.

Or do we?

Born out of nostalgia and a craze that is sweeping the nation, the City of Granbury began our kickball leagues in 2011, and they have been the fastest-growing, most popular leagues we’ve ever had. It’s been incredible.

Co-ed teams compete head-to-head in some intense games. Most every team finds themselves having substantially more fun than they anticipated.

We are not talking about groups of fit and trim athletes. There are some players in great shape, but for the most part, everyone is of average physical ability and there are no prizes for biggest biceps.

We are starting up our Summer Kickball Leagues again on June 21. We expect the slots will fill up fast.

Gather your buddies together for Friday night fun. The cost to enter a team is $200, and we will cut the team count off at 12, so start calling folks now.

Teams will consist of at least four men and four women, ages 16 and up. There can be as few as eight and up to 11 people on the field at one time. There can be 12 people in the kicking lineup in one game, but again, a max of 11 on the field.

Each team can have up to 20 people on a roster, so if you have some friends who might be able to play only once a month, they can have fun, too.

Games typically start around 6:30 p.m. and will last at least 45 minutes. We have seen all kinds of groups on these teams – high school friends, co-workers, church groups, workout partners and prison gangs.

Well, haven’t actually seen that last group, but it would be a fun way to pass the time behind those walls. And, as I said, this is a sport for everybody.

Another fun aspect is the naming of teams. People can come up with some witty names. One of our favorites was a team sponsored by a local law firm called Hood Defenders. Some other team names we have seen are Saved by the Ball, New Kicks On The Block, We Do Kickin’ Right and One-Kick Wonders.
