G’bury SB nearing playoffs

The Granbury Lady Pirates haven’t been to the postseason since 2010, but they are getting very close to wrapping up a return following District 7-4A wins of 15-0 over O.D. Wyatt and 13-3 at Arlington Heights.

The two wins improved the Lady Pirates to 8-2 in district. They are tied with Fort Worth Western Hills for second place, each two games behind league-leading Aledo.

Granbury’s losses have been to Aledo (9-0) and Western Hills (4-1), while both of Western Hills’ losses have been to Aledo (12-1 and 10-0). The Lady Pirates travel to Aledo Tuesday and host Western Hills April 19.

Monday’s win over Heights also brought the Lady Pirates’ record to .500 for the first time this season (12-12). They opened the season 0-6 by playing in one of the state’s toughest tournaments at Lufkin Hudson.

“It feels good to be at .500,” said Granbury coach Chad Kimberling. “The girls have worked really hard to build from that opening tournament, and I’m seeing the results.”

Destini Lopez (10-8) pitched her fourth no-hitter in district play against Wyatt, albeit another game shortened by the mercy rule. In its eight district wins, Granbury has outscored its opponents 116-14.

“I was a little worried after not playing for eight days or so, but they knocked the rust off pretty well,” said Kimberling. “One thing that was really positive, was we worked on some things that we are going to need in our games come end of district and into playoffs. We manufactured some situations for ourselves so that we could work on those aspects of our game, and, for the most part, executed pretty well.

“I was just glad to get back to playing, and I know the girls were as well.”

In addition to their remaining district games, the Lady Pirates have a nondistrict game against 2A powerhouse Brock Saturday at 11 at home and host rival Stephenville on April 20.
