G’bury opens 7-4A tennis with rout

The Granbury Pirates took the first step toward a third consecutive playoff appearance by routing Arlington Heights 17-2 at the McLeland Tennis Center in Fort Worth Tuesday.

The only matches the Yellowjackets managed to win involved last spring’s boys state singles qualifier Zan Rive. He defeated Joel Rodgers of Granbury in singles 8-3, but the Pirates’ Peter Mueller and Josh Smith almost pulled off a victory in doubles before losing 8-6 to Zan and Cameron Rive.

“We almost took him in doubles,” said Granbury coach Jeff Bramlett of Zan Rive.

Elsewhere, Granbury (4-2 overall) dominated, including Rodgers bouncing back in doubles with partner Noah Smith for an 8-1 trouncing. The Pirates had a 128-17 advantage in games (with one defaulted match).

Thomas Tigner and Trace Chiappe in boys singles, along with Keelyn Taylor and Deanna Rupp in girls singles, won 8-0. So did the girls doubles duos of Kate Bramlett and Elizabeth Morton, state qualifiers in the spring, and Alex Jenny and Taylor.

Not to be left out, the mixed doubles pair of Katey Singer and Kolby West also posted an 8-0 win.

“It was a good start to district,” said Granbury coach Bramlett.
