G’bury nearing playoffs

The Granbury Pirates are almost in the baseball playoffs.

They clinched a tie for third in District 7-4A Tuesday with a 14-0 thumping of Trimble Tech in Fort Worth and need just one more win to secure the spot outright.

The Pirates (14-11, 8-4 in 7-4A) were playing at district-leading Aledo last night and host runner-up Fort Worth Arlington Heights next Friday.

Trailing the Pirates in the standings are Southwest and Western Hills, both at 6-6. Western Hills was playing at South Hills last night and host Wyatt next Friday. Southwest was at Heights last night and hosts South Hills next Friday.

Granbury, Western Hills and Southwest all split their two games against each other, so no one teams owns a tiebreaker against another.

If Southwest were to upset Arlington Heights last night and Granbury topped Aledo, the Pirates would be playing for a share of second place next Friday.

However, if the Pirates don’t win at least one of their final two district games, they could find themselves in a playoff to determine seeding for the postseason – or perhaps even to see if they reach the postseason.

Miles Wagner improved to 7-3 with a 1.91 ERA this season for the Pirates with his shutout Tuesday. Of the 59 pitches he threw, 40 were strikes.

“Miles did a good job and was efficient in doing it,” said Granbury coach Brad Hart.

The Pirates also banged out 17 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance from Brady Retz, a 3-for-4 night from Payton Rhodes, and a 2-for-3 night from Daniel Arnett that raised his team-leading batting average to .455.

“Good job of taking care of business,” said Hart. “Their pitching was not very good and we did a good job of letting the ball travel and squaring it up.”

Tyler Titus was hit by a pitch three times, giving him nine on the season. The team has been hit by a pitch a total of 34 times this season.
