Living up to the tournament’s name, the Granbury Lady Pirates finished second in the West Texas Shootout in Abilene.
They lost 2-1 to Abilene Cooper in the championship game – in a shootout.
The teams ended regulation tied at 1 after Kaitlin Winkleman of the Lady Pirates scored with five minutes. In the shootout, however, only Mallory Bersi scored for Granbury, while three players scored for Cooper.
“I think we played our best game of the tournament,” said Granbury coach David Winkleman, whose team came out with a 2-1-1 record.
“They fought back hard.”
Bersi and Lily Middleton were named to the all-tournament team.
Kim Bantz was in goal for Granbury in the tourney.
The Lady Pirates opened with a 2-1 win over Abilene, with Maggie Kirby scoring the winning goal.
That was followed by a 4-0 pasting of Abilene’s junior varsity as four different players scored a goal. Slaughter and Bersi each had a goal and assist.
Courtney Heathington’s goal with 16 minutes left tied the final pool game against San Angelo Lake View 1-1. Still, the Lady Pirates advanced as the top team from their pool.
