G’bury girls earn draw

Just when it looked as if the Granbury Lady Pirates were going to come away with their second District 15-4A soccer victory Tuesday, they had to settle for a 1-1 tie with visiting Kennedale at Pirate Stadium.

The tie left the Lady Pirates (7-13-2 overall) with a 1-5-1 district record. They are hanging on to life for the fourth and final playoff berth from the league with three regular seasons games, including last night’s trip to Stephenville.

The game was tied at 0-0 for the first 55 minutes before Granbury scored the first goal. It was on a free kick by Kelci Slaughter from 35 yards away.

“It was a beautiful kick,” said Granbury coach David Winkleman. “She placed it just beautufully.”

The Granbury defense maintaiedn control of the game for the next 10 minutes before the Ladycats seized an opportunity to draw even.

“Their best play, a freshman, found the ball the ball and fired a rocket,” said Winkleman.

“I don’t know many people who would have stopped that shot.”

Overall, Winkleman was pleased with the way his team played, particularly on defense.

“We played really well. We were really physical,” he said.
