The Granbury Pirates were so close to being 6-0 in district.
Despite having given up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to allow Aledo to close within a run, if the Pirates could have gotten the final out they would have escaped with a road upset of the state’s No. 7 team.
They didn’t and they didn’t.
Aledo scored twice with two outs for a 4-3 victory in a District 7-4A baseball game Tuesday night. In all, they erased a 3-0 deficit with four runs, aided greatly by Granbury’s only two errors on the night.
“We gave it away,” said Granbury coach Brad Eppler, whose team fell to 5-1 in district (11-7 overall), slipping into a second-place tie Aledo (17-2).
Both are one game behind Arlington Heights (10-6, 6-0), whom Granbury was hosting last night. Heights handed Aledo it’s league loss, 2-1 in Fort Worth. A Granbury victory would likely leave the three tied for first at the midpoint of district, while a Pirate loss would leave them in third place.
“The way I see it, we have the same record this year against Aledo as O.D. Wyatt (the last-place team in district), 0-1. That’s all that matters.”
The Pirates appeared to have all the momentum as the bottom of the seventh inning started. They had scored to go up 3-0, adding to the solo runs they scored in each of the first two innings.
Payton Rhodes delivered a strong pitching performance for the Pirates, going the distance. He gave up just four hits and none of Aledo’s runs were earned.
Of the 30 batters he faced, he delivered 20 first-pitch strikes.
Prior to the seventh inning, no Aledo runner had reached third base. The Bearcats left three runners on base in the contest, all on second. Granbury stranded five, including two on third.
The Bearcats also had no extra-base hits in the contest. Granbury had one, a double by Landon Gray, who also walked and drove in two runs.
Landon Weatherly had two hits for the Pirates.
Despite the loss, the Pirates have outscored their district opponents 59-12.
