Crusaders end skid with homecoming blowout

October 17, 2012

Last season the Cornerstone Crusaders only lost four games all season, reaching the second round of the Texas Christian Athletic League playoffs and finishing 8-4.

They entered Friday’s homecoming game against Fort Worth Christian Life Prep having dropped three straight.

Still, playing one of the toughest schedules in the state for a team their size, the Crusaders (3-4) found themselves coming into the contest ranked fourth in the state in TCAL Division II in one poll.

They’ll get no argument from Christian Life Prep, an independent program playing its first game of the season. After a respectable showing from the visitors in the first quarter, with Cornerstone jumping out to a 24-12 advantage, the Crusaders outscored them 34-0 over the next two periods before the game was called because of six-man’s 45-point mercy rule.

The mercy rule is enforced if a team gets a 45-point lead at the half or at any point in the second half.

Brenden Brawley rushed for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just three carries. He was also 3-for-4 passing for 77 yards and two scores, while Forest Copenhaver was 4-for-5 for 75 yards and two TDs.

The duo also accounting for 84 yards and two touchdowns receiving (Brawley 2-53, TD; Copenhaver 1-31, TD).

“Twelve teams make the playoffs, the six district winners and then the next six best teams based on the Max Preps ratings,” said Cornerstone coach Bobby Johnson. “So even if we don’t win district we’ve got a pretty shot of making the playoffs.”
