In a clash between two unbeaten boys basketball teams Tuesday night in Tolar, the Rattlers were outscored 19-14 in the fourth quarter in a 44-42 loss to Comanche.
Ty Johnston led the Rattlers with 14 points and Zack Hasegawa added 11. Johnston’s night included four buckets from 3-point range.
Tolar (5-1) had to deal with a stout zone defense from the Indians most of the way, but outscored Comanche (6-0) in the second and third quarters. Comanche managed to record only three points in the third quarter, and the Rattlers entered the final period with a 28-25 lead.
Tolar head coach Kent Caruthers said that his team had the ball in the closing seconds but missed two field goal attempts within about 10 feet of the basket. Comanche then secured the rebound before time expired.
“Comanche is a good team,” Caruthers said. “They had good size. They were real strong on the inside. That hurt us. They were real physical. They were in zone most of the game. We made bad passes and didn’t take care of the ball well at all.”
Tolar had stretched its lead a little in the fourth quarter, but turnovers spoiled the run.
“In the fourth quarter we jumped up on them by about five points, then we turned the ball over twice in a row and they were right back in it,” Caruthers said. “It (the loss) wasn’t becuase of effort.
“Justin Brown (knee) will be out for a while. We’ll see how it progresses.”
