Centennial ends GHS SB season

While it’s difficult to paint a pretty picture of an 18-3 loss, Granbury Lady Pirate softball coach Chad Kimberling can point to one major difference.

Well, make that 14 major difference – as in 14 unearned runs scored by Burleson Centennial Saturday morning as the Lady Spartans swept their best-of-three Class 4A bidistrict playoff series.

“That’s hard to swallow,” said Kimberling. “And I felt positive about today after the way we ended last night (Friday).”

In losing the opening game 6-3 at Centennial, the Lady Pirates (15-17) fell behind 4-0 on a first-inning grand slam by Madison Thompson.

The Lady Pirates battled back, cutting a 6-0 deficit in half on Destini Lopez’s three-run home run in the sixth.

“Holy cow, that was a shot. Both of those home runs were good blasts,” said Kimberling.

“If we play seven innings like we did the last four, we could very well have come away with a win tonight.”

Saturday also featured a home run by Centennial (25-8) in the first, but this time it was an inside-the-park shot as Madison Montgomery rounded the bases once the ball got away in the outfield.

But it was the second and third innings that spelled doom for the Lady Pirates. The Lady Spartans scored eight unearned runs in the second and added six more runs – three unearned – in the third.

“They are a heck of a team, but they are not 15 runs better than us,” said Kimberling.

Kimberling noted that, despite the ending, the Lady Pirates accomplished their goal of getting back to the playoffs this season. They had not advanced to the postseason since 2010.

“We had a good season, but there’s still a lot more to be done,” he said. “So now we work in the offseason and work to get farther next year.”
