Sometimes a team just has “one of those nights.”
Like the one the Granbury Lady Pirate soccer team had Tuesday in a 6-0 road loss to Birdville.
“We played against a very good team and they took it to us,” said Lady Pirate coach David Winkleman.
“We played hard. We didn’t give up.”
The Lady Pirates (5-3-1) lost for the first time in regulation. their previous two losses were in shootouts in tournaments, to Abilene Cooper in the finals of the West Texas Shootout and to eventual tourney champion Weatherford in the opening round of the Aledo Tournament of Champions.
And this game was close for a bit, with Birdville leading 1-0 at the half. Then, the Lady Hawks scored five goals in the second half.
Granbury was hampered by several starters being on the bench with injuries.
“I was okay with our first half, but in the second half they really took it to us,” said Winkleman.
“We’ve played some really good teams this season, but this was the best we’ve played yet.
“We’ve got to put it behind us and move on. The Duncanville Tournament is going to have some more tough teams.”
