Six games in six days is a lot, even if it is during spring break.

That’s what the Tolar Rattlers baseball team endured before taking a few days off.

First, the Rattlers played three games in the Ranger Tournament over a span of two days. Then, after a day off, they had three more games on consecutive days.

“That’s a lot of baseball, but we’re trying to get some things ironed out before district,” said Tolar coach Trey Holcomb.

“It felt like we were one of those old barnstorming teams going from town to town each day looking for a game.”

Five of the games were on the road.

The Rattlers came through the stretch with two wins, three losses and a game that ended with the score tied at 8 against Hico.

In the final two games they had a thrilling come-from-behind 6-5 home win over Waxahachie Family Faith, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh. They then fell 20-0 at Palmer, the No. 9 team in the state.

The win against Family Faith was Tolar’s ninth of the season. The Rattlers (9-5) only won eight games in 2012. Cole Chism scored the winning run on Tyler Phillips’ sacrifice fly.

Tolar began District 10-2A play last night at Rio Vista. Holcomb believes this season’s squad should be among the playoff contenders.

“We should be right in the mix,” he said. “We have six kids with pitching stats, and five have thrown 10 or more innings. Even if we have some rainouts and have to double up we’ll be in better shape than some other teams.

“There’s not a Brock in our district this season, but Grandview’s good, Maypearl’s usually good, and Whitney’s got some transfers that will will them good.”

Tolar enters district play with three players hitting above. 350 and 35 or more plate appearances on the season, Dusty Kimmel (.407, four doubles, a triple, a home run, 11 RBIs), Oompa Glavin (.396, three doubles, a triple, seven RBIs), and Dakota Endsley (.368, four doubles, a triple, 10 RBIs).

The Rattlers have also shown patience at the plate with 55 walks and 24 hit by pitches. Endsley leads with eight walks, while Alfredo Triana has been hit by a pitch nine times.
