Area teams gear up for district tourneys

April 2, 2014

The Granbury Pirates and Lady Pirates tuned up for their respective District 7-4A Tournaments by competing in the Arlington Heights Invitational at Pecan Valley this past weekend.

The tournament also served as district preview as several 7-4A teams participated.

The Pirates finished fifth with a two-day total of 637 (310-327). Northwest won with a 599 (299-300), followed by Aledo Black at 606 (294-312).

Arlington Heights Blue was in fourth place, 10 shots up on the Pirates with a 627 (323-304).

The Lady Pirates entered two squads, with the Purple team placing fifth with a 748 (370-378) and the Gold team taking eighth with an 822 (410-412).

“We are getting closer to playing to our potential,” said Granbury boys coach Steve Ward.”It should be interesting at district.”

The Pirates advanced to state last season.

Aledo Black, ranked third in the state, won the girls division, shooting 630 (321-309), 28 shots ahead of the North Texas Titans. Aledo Orange was third with a 714 (358-356).

“Our problem was not being able to put together two consistent sides,” said Lady Pirate coach Becky Addison. “The girls played really well on one nine and then struggled the on the other.

“So, for the next eight days we have a lot of work to do, and the girls are going to have to put in some serious overtime as well.”
