Since he first picked up a golf club at age 6, Tucker Allen has been impressing folks on the course.
His most recent success came in one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in Texas and the Southwest, the Starburst Junior Golf Classic.
Tucker shot an 8-under-par 208 for three rounds at Squaw Valley Golf Club in Glen Rose and won the 12-year-old Division going away, topping the runner-up by eight strokes.
Tucker, a Tolar resident and North Central Texas Academy student, opened the tournament with a 5-under-par 67, followed by struggling to a 3-over-par 75. He came back strong, however, and wrapped up play with a 6-under-par 66.
It was his third time to play in the Starburst Classic and his first time to win. Over six years he said he has won roughly 50 tournaments.
His success includes topping the field at the elite Copperhead Classic in Florida in 2010, along with placing in the top 10 in both the U.S. Kids Junior World Championship and Calloway Junior World Championships in 2009.
In 2008, at age 7, he was named the Player of the Year in the U.S. Kids Dallas Summer Tour.
Tucker said his first attraction to golf was simply because he liked hitting the ball, adding, “It’s fun.”
Still, even with all of his victories, Tucker said this was a special tournament performance for him.
“This is one of my best tournaments,” he said. “It’s the most under par I’ve ever shot.”
He said his previous best was five under par.
Tucker’s main practice course is Harbor Lakes. But he said he loves to play at Squaw Valley often.
“I like the greens,” he said. “It’s a good course.
Tucker said he is already making plans to defend his title in 2014.
