That didn’t take long to change.
The Granbury Lady Pirates entered last week sharing the District 7-4A softball lead with Aledo. They had outscored five straight opponents, including rival Stephenville in a nondistrict game, by a combined score of 93-10.
Last night they found themselves playing Western Hills at home to avoid being in fourth place.
That’s what happens when a team goes on the road twice and loses 2-1 despite throwing a one-hitter against South Hills, and 10-0 to the defending state semifinalists in Aledo.
Aledo entered last night’s final game of the first half with a 6-0 district record, followed by South Hills at 5-1. Aledo, which has outscored its district opponents 98-2, topped South Hills 23-0 in their first of two matchups.
Granbury and Western Hills came into last night tied for third, each 4-2.
The Lady Pirates (9-5 overall) were held to two hits at Aledo. However, that is half of the hits the Ladycats have surrendered in all of their district games combined.
While the game was the sixth win via mercy rule for the Ladycats, it is nonetheless the closest anyone has played Aledo in district this season. That, however, is little consolation for Granbury coach Mallory Smith and her team.
“We need a big win on Tuesday (last night),” Smith said.
“Aledo was a big game for us, and we were not quite mentally prepared.”
Maci Samuelson and Destini Lopez mustered the only hits for Granbury. Whitley Tipton and Kristen Money reached base via walks.
The Lady Pirates were also undone by six errors, leading to five unearned runs for Aledo.
The top four teams advance to the playoffs. Last season Granbury made it as the third-place team, losing to Burleson Centennial in bidistrict.
Smith is hoping for a second-half surge and a higher finish this season.
“The girls are still processing the loss, and I’m hoping they will be resilient and fight back in the second round,” said Smith.
