With the exception of their loss to Aledo, the Granbury Lady Pirates are undefeated in District 7-4A volleyball.
The Lady Pirates have not only not dropped a match, they haven’t even lost a game within those matches.
This includes Tuesday’s 25-14, 25-19, 25-11 thrashing of Fort Worth Southwest Tuesday at the James Wann Sports Center.
The victory left the Lady Pirates (15-15 overall) alone in second place in district with a 5-1 record. They trail Aledo (27-4, 6-0), the No. 4 team in the state according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
In fact, the loss to Aledo was also a sweep, albeit not in the Lady Pirates’ favor and also at the James Wann Center. The two teams meet again Oct. 9 in Aledo in a battle that should go a long way in determining the district champion.
If Aledo wins, it would likely put them two matches ahead of the Lady Pirates in the standings with a sweep of their league meetings. That would mean Aledo would have to lose at least three times in its final five matches for Granbury to have an opportunity for a third straight district title.
If, however, the Lady Pirates get a measure of revenge, the teams would likely be tied coming down the stretch.
This is, of course, assuming that no one else in the district upsets either team. Considering no one else has taken so much as a single game within the matches, it’s easy to think the Oct. 9 showdown does loom as large as anticipated.
“We are continuing to keep our focus on improvements every day,” said Lady Pirate coach Tammy Clark. “We still need to continue to work the plan. If we focus on each match and our consistency and aggressive play, then the record will reflect our improvements.”
Shannon Helm led the sweep of Southwest (8-16, 1-5). Playing her usual solid style at the net, she had a dozen of the team’s 33 kills. She was also overwhelming at the service line with 11 of their 16 aces.
In addition, Helm posted 2.5 of the team’s six blocks.
“Shannon was notably aggressive at the net today on both sides of the ball,” said Clark.
“Breanna Crain played defense and ran our serve-receive.”
Crain had 14 of Granbury’s 37 defensive digs.
