There had not been a night like it in a long time for Granbury High basketball fans.
The Lady Pirates, behind a heroic effort from 6-4 all-state post Lilley Vander Zee, defeated rival Cleburne 54-33 in bidistrict Tuesday.
Playing with a broken knuckle on her right shooting hand, received in the season final, she scored 12 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked six shots. And she played much of the contest using only her left hand.
Back home, the Pirates pulled off one of the most exciting wins in the history of the program to reach the playoffs for first time since the 1999-2000 season. Their 62-58 upset of O.D. Wyatt qualified them for bidistrict as the fourth-place team from District 7-4A.
The Lady Pirates (21-13) were playing Wichita Falls Rider (30-3) in the area round last night in Decatur. The Pirates (17-14) will meet Waco University (28-4) in bidistrict Tuesday at 7 in Waxahachie.
