“Dave Campbell’s Texas Football” has hit newsstands, and fans are quickly flipping to the pages of their respective districts to see where their favorite teams are picked to finish.
The magazine has predicted a virtual carbon copy finish of last season locally, with Granbury tabbed third in 7-4A and Tolar getting the runner-up nod in 6-2A Division II.
The Pirates return numerous starters on both offense and defense from last season’s 7-4 squad (5-2 in district) that posted the most victories since 1998. They also reached bidistrict for a third consecutive season under coach Scotty Pugh.
Defending district champion Aledo (10-2, 7-0 last season after winning three state titles in a row) is once again the favorite, followed by Fort Worth Southwest (9-3, 6-1). Those teams also finished 1-2 last season.
Fort Worth Arlington Heights (2-8, 2-5) is picked as the fourth playoff team. Rounding out the 7-4A picks are Western Hills (3-7, 2-5), O.D. Wyatt (6-5, 4-3), South Hills (4-6, 2-5) and Trimble Tech (1-9, 0-7).
“It’s nice, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on those predictions,” said Granbury coach Scotty Pugh. “Glad Dave Campbell’s has to pick ’em and not me.
“Think they got Aledo correct, but I also think everybody in the district will be better than last year.”
Aledo enters the season ranked third in the state.
In Tolar, the Rattlers (9-3, 6-1) made their first playoff appearance in 2A. With a majority of starters back, they are again expected to be in the postseason, but last year’s state finalist, Corsicana Mildred (13-2, 7-0), remains the favorite.
Mildred is 10th in the state in preseason.
Also from 6-2A Division II, Blooming Grove (7-4, 4-3) is picked third, and Scurry-Rosser (5-5, 4-3) is fourth. Rounding out the picks are Rio Vista (4-6, 3-4), Dallas Life Oak Cliff (1-9, 1-6), Rice (4-6, 3-4) and Millsap (0-10, 0-7).
In TAPPS Six-Man Division II, North Central Texas Academy (10-2, 2-1) gets the runner-up nod in District 2 behind Wichita Falls Notre Dame. Cornerstone (6-6, 2-1) is picked second in TCAF District 4 Six-Man behind Fort Worth Nazarene.
