The Granbury City Council has agreed to a request by Acton United Methodist Church for free use of the conference center to host a community holiday meal in December.
Acton UMC plans to partner with other churches and agencies, as well as grocery stores, to provide free holiday meals on Thursday, Dec. 20.
So far, the church has received commitments of partnership from Granbury Church of Christ, Brazos Covenant Ministries, Church on the Rock, Project 44 and Mission Granbury.
The City Council voted unanimously to donate space at the Granbury Resort Conference Center for the event. Use of the space on a weekday normally would cost about $1,200, according to Mayor Rickie Pratt.
Plans for the holiday meal are modeled after H-E-B’s “Feast of Sharing” event, which began in 1989 in Corpus Christi and Laredo.
“Feast of Sharing” events have featured volunteer-driven sit-down dinners with health fairs, children’s areas and even pictures with Santa.
According to the city’s communications director, Shanna Smith-Snyder, volunteers will set up the event that morning and city staffers will “tear down afterwards.”
