The Commissioners Court yesterday approved a loan agreement regarding a historic document that will hang in the newly restored courthouse.
The framed document is the handwritten results from Hood County’s first elections in 1866-1867. The gift was presented to the county by J.C. Campbell. Precinct 4 Commissioner Steve Berry, who presided over the Commissioners Court meeting because County Judge Darrell Cockerham is attending a conference in San Antonio, said the agreement was a mere formality recommended by County Attorney Lori Kaspar.
Per the arrangement, the document will hang for an unspecified period of time in the first floor hallway at the courthouse where it can be easily viewed by visitors, Berry said. “He (Campbell) really doesn’t want it back. He just wants to make sure it’s always preserved and used for historic reasons,” said Berry.
