Local gardeners participated in the annual Hood County Fruit & Vegetable Show Monday afternoon in Annex I on West Pearl Street. Tomatoes, potatoes, squash, beans, onions, garlic, egg plant, pumpkins, peas and cucumbers fell under the close scrutiny of the judge, Hood County Extension Agent Marty Vahlenkamp. He also offered plenty of expert advice to the participants. The Balmuth family (from left), twins Jake and Eliza Balmuth, 14, came out the big winners in 13 categories, including Best of Show for their small tomatoes. Christina Bredenkamp took first-place honors with her green beans and squash. Kathy Murray placed first with her tomato entry.
