Sgt. 1st Class Riley Stephens, 39, of Tolar died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 after he was shot in a gun battle in Afghanistan.

A Candlelight Vigil was held on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012 on the Old Tolar Football Field. Angel Flight flew his flag draped casket to Cleburne Airport on Saturday morning, Oct. 6, and visitation was held at Wiley Funeral Home, Saturday evening.

Funeral Services were held at the Tolar Baptist Church on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 at 2 p.m. with interment with a Horse Drawn Caisson and Full Military Honors in the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at 5 p.m. Sunday evening.

Memorials should be given to the Wounded Warrior Fund.

Riley was born Aug. 26, 1973 and was he salutatorian of Tolar’s Class of 1991 where he played defensive end on the Rattler Football Squad.

In his 20 year career with the Army, Riley has been awarded: Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device “V”; Bronze Star Medal, 3, Posthumous; Purple Heart 2, Posthumous; Army Commendation with Combat Distinguishing Device “V”; Army Commendation Medal, 3; Army Achievement Medal, 3; Army Good Conduct Medal, 5; National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, 2; Afghanistan Campaign medal with Bronze Service Star, 3; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, 2; Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, 3; Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, NATO Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge; Air Assault Badge; Special Forces Tab; Ranger Tab; Combat and Special Skill Badge Basic Marksmanship Qual Badge with Bar, Weapon, Rifle, Expert; Right Side Awards with Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation; Overseas Service Bar, 4.

SFC Riley Stephens is survived by his Wife, Tiffany Stephens of Fayetteville, N.C.; Children, Austin Stephens of Aledo, Texas, Morgan Stephens of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Rylee Ann Stephens of Fayetteville, N.C.; Parents, Michael A. and Joann Stephens of Tolar, Texas; Brother Ken and Gail Stephens of Tolar, Texas; Grandmother, Beverly Gaetz of Sterling, Mich.; Uncles, Jack and Cherry Stephens of Glen Rose, Texas, and Troy and Debbie Armstrong of Tolar, Texas; and a number of other family members.
