Genie Baker


Genie Baker of Mansfield of formerly of Granbuy, 91, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2013.

Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home, 2301 N. Sylvania Ave. in Fort Worth.

Genie was born July 14, 1921, in Fort Worth to Eula B. and Martin Russell Francis. She graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1939 and then from the City-County Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She served with the Women’s Army Corps as a nurse during World War II in England and France.

While serving in France, she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, she was medically discharged and given six months to live. After many surgeries and treatment, she survived.

Genie returned to nursing at City-County Hospital for many years and later for family physician, Dr. James W. Brooks.

She married Edward L. Baker on June 21, 1947, in Fort Worth. They were members of Southside Baptist Church of Granbury.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors: Daughters, Judy L. Wood and husband, Bob, and Linda Abele; son, Gregg Baker; grandchildren, Robert Edward Wood, Phillip Wood, Brian Wood, Jennifer Wood, Erin Jimenez Jares and Tony Abele; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
