A. Newman Fort Jr. of Granbury, 74, passed away at sunset Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, in his home town of Granbury surrounded by his family.
Memorial service: A memorial service will be held in Granbury on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Wiley Funeral Home, 400 Highway 377 East with Rev. Neal Norman officiating.
Memorials: Memorial donations are welcome to be made in A. Newman Fort’s name to Brandon’s Hope after-school outreach program at First United Methodist Church of Granbury or to the Houston Audubon Society.
Newman was born in Burkeville, Texas, Jan. 2, 1938, to Ardis Newman Fort, Sr. and Effie Lee Bobbit. He was valedictorian of Burkeville High School and a graduate of The University of Texas at Arlington, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1962.
Newman spent much of his adult life in Houston where he was a longtime employee of both The M.W. Kellogg Company and most recently The Westlake Group, from where he retired three years ago capping a successful career as a senior information technology designer and corporate manager.
Newman was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed traveling the USA in search of new bird species with his wife, Lynne. Newman attended Granbury’s First United Methodist Church and was a beloved volunteer in its Brandon’s Hope after-school tutoring and outreach program serving local elementary school students.
Survivors: Mr. Fort is survived by his wife of 55 years, S. Lynne Fort, two sons, Jay Fort and his wife Maria Sanchez-Fort, Roger Fort and his wife Ashlee Fort, three grandchildren, Arianne Maria Fort, Blaise Antonio Newman Fort and Amelia Lynn Fort, and his sister Shirley O’Quinn and brother John T. Fort.
