Voting for fire chiefs, assistant fire chiefs and annual awards has been completed by all but one of the nine volunteer fire departments in Hood County.
Tolar VFD firefighters on Tuesday night voted Matt Hutsell as chief for the 11th straight year. Cody Watson, who had taken over the assistant chief spot during the year, kept the position. Craig Davis was voted captain.
Tolar’s Firefighter of the Year is Brian Rothe, and Brian Gall took home the Chief’s Award. Rothe was also named as a lieutenant along with Gall. Rookie of the Year is Josh Mercer. Hutsell is the training officer, Sam Morrison is sergeant-at-arms, Lisa Wilson is EMS coordinator and Rothe is safety officer.
On Dec. 5, deCordova Bend Estates firefighters voted Skip Davenport chief once again, and Assistant Chief is Stephen Boynton. The firefighters also re-elected Kenneth Elliott as a captain and selected Jason Frye as a new captain. Michael Callahan was re-elected as a lieutenant, and Adam Butler is a new lieutenant. Bill Stone is secretary, Craig Gossard is treasurer and Rino Cordero is sergeant-at-arms.
In late December, the North Hood County VFD firefighters once again elected Mike Bell as chief. Terry Worcester is the assistant chief. Voting for Firefighter of the Year ended up in a three-way tie between Dora Sosebee, Julie Bell and Stephen Bell. Keifer Shockey was named as training captain, and Crystal Head is EMS captain. Sosebee was voted equipment lieutenant. Julie Bell also earned the EMS of the Year award.
In Lipan, Fire Chief Kevin Andrews and Assistant Chief Sam Easley were both recently elected to a second term.
Indian Harbor’s elections for chief and assistant chief are staggered, held every other year. Randy Schmelz was re-elected as chief when voting was held in December. Jeff Young remains assistant chief. The next vote for assistant chief will be in December.
On Dec. 9, Johnny Miller was elected as Station 70 fire chief for the 16th consecutive time. Gary Tillison was voted assistant chief for the fourth year. Terry Baker Sr. was voted Firefighter of the Year.
Cresson, which has elections only every three years, has Chief Joe Huffman and Assistant Chief Bob Cornett still in place. The next election for the Cresson VFD is set for January 2015.
Pecan Plantation’s election will be Saturday, Feb. 1. Dave Raffa is completing his 17th consecutive year as chief. Bill Mitchell is the assistant chief.
The voting for the city of Granbury was previously announced, with Darrell Grober re-elected as chief and Matt Bennett repeating as assistant. Brent Blackman was voted Firefighter of the Year, and Chase Roop was honored as Rookie of the Year.
