The Tolar Volunteer Fire Department – which is celebrating its 50th anniversary year – voted Matt Hutsell as fire chief for the 10th year, while Cody Watson was named firefighter of the year, responder of the year and captain.
The firefighters met to conduct the voting on Jan. 8 at their station in Tolar.
Hutsell said that Watson earned the honor, in part, by consistently leading by example had having a gung-ho attitude about the work of fighting fires.
“He has made a personal goal this year to become more physically fit, and has stuck with it,” Hutsell said. “He finished the Spartan Beast Race, which is a 12-mile obstacle course race with over 25 obstacles. You will never find him standing by when work is being done. At fires, he is usually the first one in and the last one out. When we return from a fire, he is the first one with a brush in his hand to get the trucks washed and equipment put back in service.”
Ray Wilson was again voted assistant fire chief, for the third year, and Asa Keith was voted lieutenant. The Chief’s Recognition Award went to Lisa Wilson.
Others elected were safety officer Patrick Russell, training officer Wade Patterson, EMS coordinator Lisa Wilson and sergeant-at-arms Sam Morrison.
