The state Auditor’s Office (SAO) has confirmed that an audit of the Brazos River Authority (BRA) will take place sometime in fiscal year 2014.
The offices of state Sen. Brian Birdwell (R-Granbury) and state Rep. Jim Keffer (R-Eastland) announced the audit this week in a joint press release. The audit is due to a “direct request” made by the lawmakers last summer, the press release stated.
Birdwell and Keffer said they requested the audit to ensure the BRA’s “efficiency and effectiveness.”
The pair also is seeking information related to the 2007 suspension of hydroelectric operations at the dam at Possum Kingdom Lake. Some people believe that this led to significantly lower water levels in Lake Granbury. BRA officials blame the low levels on drought.
The audit by the SAO will be in addition to an upcoming review of the BRA by the Legislative Budget Board, which was ordered by the passage of Keffer’s and Birdwell’s HB 2362 during the last Legislative session.
