A place of honor

September 14, 2013

Sheriff Roger Deeds stands in the lobby of the Hood County Jail next to a framed photo of patrol sergeant, instructor and SWAT team member Lance McLean, a 38-year-old deputy who suffered a gunshot wound in the line of duty on June 28 and died the next day in a Fort Worth hospital. The photo, along with a folded U.S. flag above it in a display case, on Monday was mounted on the wall beside the likeness of Deputy Larry Miller. Miller died Jan. 27, 1992, as a result of a car accident that occurred as he was driving to lend assistance on a fire call. At the time of his death, Miller was just a year older than McLean. They are the only two Hood County deputies who have died in the line of duty.
