Hickey graduates from

air force basic training

Air Force Airman Walker Hickey graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, in San Antonio.

Hickey is the son of James and Erlene Hickey of Weatherford. He is the grandson of Mildred Hickey of Granbury and the late Don Hickey, and also Billy Shackelford of Weatherford.

The airman completed an intensive, eight week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airman who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is a 2012 graduate of Weatherford High School.

Tolar native retires

from Navy after 20 years

Lieutenant Commander James C. Cherry was honored with a retirement ceremony June 28 at the Norfolk Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Va. after serving 20 years of faithful and honorable service to his country.

A native of Tolar and student of Tolar and Granbury schools, Cherry attended Boot Camp in 1993 after graduating from Granbury High School in 1986 and attending several years of college.

After Boot Camp and several overseas deployments onboard the USS America (CV-66) and USS Enterprise (CVN-65) as an Aviation Electronics Technician, he was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program.

For two years he attended Texas A&M University at College Station, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. Later, in his off-duty time, he earned a second Bachelor of Science degree in Business and a Master’s degree in Logistics, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

His junior officer tours include USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in Norfolk, VA and VX-9 in China Lake, Calif. Cherry also served as an Admiral’s Aide with Commander, Fleet Readiness Centers and was imbedded with the Army’s 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command in Iraq for almost a year, serving as an Electronics Warfare Officer. His senior officer tours include PMA-265 and PMA-260 at the Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Md. and VAW-125 in Norfolk, Va.

Cherry earned DoD acquisition certifications in Life Cycle Logistics, Production, Quality & Manufacturing, Program Management, Test & Evaluation, and Systems Planning, Research, Development & Engineering.

His personal awards include a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy Commendation Medals, and two Navy Achievement Medals, as well as numerous Army, Navy, and Coast Guard unit and service awards.

Cherry lives in Carrollton, Va. with his wife Page and son Ryan.
