Home of the brave

JoAnn Stephens (left) recently received a special quilt at a meeting of the Granbury Quilters Club. Stephens is the mother of Riley Stephens, a Tolar graduate who died last year while serving in Afghanistan. Quilting club member Lucy Esposito (right) made the quilt to honor the fallen soldier. The Civil War pattern of the quilt is called “Home of the Brave.” The 65 members present at the meeting stood up to applaud and give thanks to this local hero. The original quilts were made by Northern women, during the Civil War as part of a supply drive by the U.S. Sanitary Commission to aid the Northern War cause. The Northern women made 250,000 to 400,000 quilts for the cause—all by hand.
