A bumper crop of pecans this year helped draw 42 samples to the Hood County Pecan Show this week.
“To my knowledge this was the biggest show since I have been here (May 2001),” County Agent Marty Vahlenkamp said. “I have heard Keith Hillman (former county agent) talk of around 200 samples back in the 1950s and 1960s.”
Pecan grower John Lowe earned three awards – champion classic, champion commercial and reserve classic.
Lowe showed Burkett, Caddo and Comanche varieties.
Arnold Blaylock won two honors – champion native and reserve commercial (Sioux).
Statia Moore showed the reserve native pecans.
Other participants were Phillis Brewer, Bob Murray, Steve Berry, Justin Deaver, Rodney Arms, Gary Keel, Buddy Almy, Billy Hand, Richard Trimble, Bill Young and Bobby Shelton.
